A natural way to learn music

Young children learn their native language effortlessly — by listening, copying, and being surrounded by speech long before they learn to read. Suzuki method applies this same natural process to music.
Instead of starting with reading notes on a page, children learn to play by ear — listening to recordings, watching their teacher, and copying what they hear. Reading music comes later, once they already know how to play, just as children learn to read words they can already speak.
The method is named after Dr Shinichi Suzuki, a Japanese violinist and educator who believed that every child has the ability to develop musical talent in the right environment. It is especially suited to young children (age 3+), but people of any age can learn using the method.

What makes Suzuki lessons special

In the Suzuki approach, an adult — usually a parent, but it can be any committed adult such as a grandparent or nanny — is involved in every lesson and practises with the child at home. In the rest of this guide, we'll say "you" — but it applies to whoever takes on this role.

  • You're part of every lesson — you attend every lesson, take notes, and guide your child's daily practice at home. Many parents say this becomes a special part of their week together.
  • Listening is key — audio tracks of the pieces are played at home in the background, just like a child absorbs language from the chatter around them. This daily listening helps children learn new pieces naturally.
  • Children learn by ear and by memory — your child will learn to play by watching and copying their teacher and you, building confidence and musicality from the very first lesson.
  • Constant review builds a growing repertoire — children keep playing all the pieces they've learnt, so they're always adding to what they can play without forgetting earlier pieces.

Children who learn through the Suzuki method often develop a deep, lifelong love of music — and parents love being part of the journey.

How lessons work

Lessons are online via video call, one-to-one with your child’s teacher. Each lesson is 30 minutes, split between working with your child and talking with you. The teaching part is tailored to your child’s concentration — for younger children this might be just 10–15 minutes — and the rest of the time is spent with you, going over what to practise and how best to support your child at home during the week. You attend the whole lesson and take notes. Between lessons, you and your child practise together at home, guided by the lesson notes and the audio tracks.
